Exhibition: “When There Are Nine #3”

Date: February 28, 2023 - March 28, 2023

Opening Reception: March 5, 2023, from 2-5 p.m.

The Village Theater at Cherry Hill is pleased to present “When There Are Nine #3”, a multi-media women’s art exhibit, which will feature 18 female artists showcasing their 2D and 3D artwork as a beacon of light and hope on women’s causes and issues during National Women’s History Month. Approximately 40 works of art will be on display and available for sale in the Gallery at Cherry Hill from February 28 – March 28, 2023. These works will address women’s issues and roles, including: historical perspectives, family, diversity, politics, strength, and beauty. Works by the following nine artists will be featured in “When There Are Nine” exhibit: Nina Ashraf Asmi, Jan Brown, Barbara Melnick Carson, Rose Lewandowki, Martine MacDonald, Susan Perrish, Charlene Uresy, Alga Washington, and Sharlene Welton. An additional nine artists will be a part of a new 2023 focus called ‘The Extended Court.’ These women will also create art about women, focusing on empowerment.

“We’ve created this exhibit in remembrance of the late RBG and other women leaders, acknowledging the successes, sacrifices, and hard work by women throughout the world to improve the future,” said Sharlene Welton, artist and exhibit organizer. “Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s 2015 quote, ‘When There Are Nine’ is her response to those who question when there will be enough women on the Supreme Court. Ginsberg went on to say ‘But there’d been nine men and nobody’s ever raised a question about that’. This leadership inspired the idea for these exhibitions.”

This is the third exhibition of ‘When There Are Nine’. In March 2020, The Village Theater at Cherry Hill in Canton, presented “When There Are Nine” art exhibition to celebrate the 100th Anniversary of Women’s Right to Vote (19th Amendment), International Women’s Day, and Women’s History Month. Unfortunately, the 2020 show was short-lived due to the pandemic. In 2022, the event was at the Kayrod Gallery in Detroit, MI.

“When There Are Nine #3” will host a special main stage program and reception that is free and open to the public on Sunday, March 5, 2023, from 2-5 p.m. at The Village Theater at Cherry Hill, located at 50400 Cherry Hill Road, in Canton, MI. In addition to the exhibit’s paintings, photography, clay works, and embroidery, the reception will also feature special speakers and poetry. The stage program is slated to begin at 2:30 p.m., with a special 11-minute non-traditional fashion show by Laura Earle’s FETISH Project. The public is invited to attend and to celebrate Women’s History month at this special event.
